Goodness gracious! Report from Lionfest – the Haslemere fringe festival

Octopus Diary

Our new website was officially launched last weekend at the Haslemere Fringe Festival, known locally as Lionfest. This is a biennial celebration of local artistic talent that donates all profits to charity – this year the partner charity was Dreams Come True.

The event is entirely set up and run by volunteers, so the organisers rely on companies like us to sponsor them. We were more than happy to help with the cost of the weekend not least because it gave us a great opportunity to show off our ukes and tell everyone about our new online presence.

Trainee ukers

We also sent a crate of ukes over to the ‘Lion’s Den’ tent, where local musician and educator Marco was running a ukulele workshop for beginners each morning. Marco runs Good Gracious Music whose mission is to awaken the creative spirit in everyone; according to their website “to provide the encouragement and tools necessary to tap into this artistic seam”.

Marco certainly managed to summon an enormous amount of enthusiasm considering the 11am start, and his energy spread quickly, persuading more than 30 trainee ukers to try their hand in each session.

Playing with aplomb

His beginner workshops were impeccably planned – everyone who took part was playing with aplomb in minutes.

After a brief introduction to the ukulele, its anatomy and history, he concentrated on the basics of playing making sure that each participant learned the correct technique for holding and strumming their instrument.

He then went on to teach three simple chords – C, F, and G – with the help of some coloured stickers with which he had adorned the practice ukes. The next step was to get used to switching between chords quickly, and the best way to do that is to learn a few songs. There are a surprising number of classics that use the I-IV-V pattern – as Marco put it “with three chords you’re ready for Status Quo stardom”.

A taste of fame

After the Sunday morning session, Marco announced that the ukers had been given a prime slot on the ‘Mane stage’ (an excellent Leonine pun) that afternoon, warming up the crowd for veteran Cockney duo Chas & Dave. And so, within hours of picking up the uke for the first time, the group were performing to hundreds of people!
